Whitamino-fit: A natural remedy for low energy and fatigue

The science of Ayurveda deals with the holistic healing of mankind, bringing it closer to nature and re-establishing the natural body constitution through herbal remedies. There are many drugs in Ayurveda that improve the overall strength of the body and also prevent or delay the process of aging. Vidarikand (Pueraria tuberose Indian kudzu), Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera, Winter cherry), and Shilajit are one such drug that is widely used by Ayurvedic practitioners for their various health benefits to mankind. It is however most popular for its increased endurance and rejuvenating actions on the body.

Low energy and fatigue are common problems that can affect people of all ages. They can make it difficult to get through the day and can lead to problems at work, school, and in relationships. There are many causes of low energy and fatigue, including:

  • Lack of sleep
  • Poor diet
  • Stress
  • Dehydration
  • Medical conditions, such as anemia, thyroid problems, and chronic fatigue syndrome

If you are experiencing low energy and fatigue, it is important to talk to your doctor to rule out any underlying medical conditions. Low energy and fatigue can have a significant impact on daily life. They can make it difficult to:

  • Stay focused and productive at work or school
  • Exercise regularly
  • Take care of your family and friends
  • Enjoy your hobbies and interests

If you are struggling with low energy and fatigue, there are steps you can take to improve your situation. Talk to your doctor, make lifestyle changes, and get the support you need to feel your best.

Whitamino fit is a natural remedy that can help improve energy levels and reduce fatigue. It contains a blend of herbs that have been shown to be effective in improving energy and reducing fatigue. These herbs include ashwagandha, soybean, shatavari, vidarikand, mucuna pruriens, shilajit, cardamom, loh bhasma, and stevia.

Ashwagandha is an adaptogenic herb that has been used for centuries to improve energy levels and reduce stress. Soybean is a good source of protein and isothiocyanates, which have been shown to boost energy levels. Shatavari is an Ayurvedic herb that is known for its rejuvenating properties. Vidarikand is a root that is used to improve stamina and endurance. Mucuna pruriens is a legume that contains L-dopa, a precursor to dopamine, which is a neurotransmitter that plays a role in energy regulation. Shilajit is a natural mineral that is known for its adaptogenic and rejuvenating properties. Cardamom is a spice that has been shown to improve cognitive function and energy levels. Loh bhasma is an iron oxide that is used to improve blood circulation and energy levels. Stevia is a natural sweetener that does not cause a spike in blood sugar levels.

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera, Winter cherry)

Ashwagandha is an adaptogenic herb that has been used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine to improve energy levels and reduce fatigue. It is believed to work by helping the body to adapt to stress and to cope with fatigue.

Ashwagandha has been shown to be effective in improving energy levels in a number of studies. In one study, participants who took ashwagandha for 8 weeks reported significant improvements in energy levels, compared to those who took a placebo.

Ashwagandha has also been shown to be effective in reducing fatigue. In one study, participants who took ashwagandha for 6 weeks reported significant improvements in fatigue, compared to those who took a placebo.

                          Shilajit (Asphaltum punjabianum)

Nutritional supplements that contain ingredients from traditional Ayurvedic medicine have garnered substantial interest related to muscle function and connective tissue health. Known as the “Destroyer of Weakness” and “Rock of Life” in Sanskrit, shilajit (pronounced Sheila-jeet) is a thick, resinous pitch formed over centuries as plants and trees decompose. It is found among the rocks in the Himalayan Mountains and has been part of Ayurvedic tradition for centuries. British archaeologists have found evidence of its use in the Indus Valley civilization in Pakistan and northwest India as early as 2600 B.C. Research is beginning to support shilajit’s potential to prevent several diseases, with a primary application in the prevention of Alzheimer's disease. In addition to its cognitive benefits, a study by the Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine states that "shilajit, an Ayurvedic formulation, is safe for long term use as a dietary supplement for a number of disorders like iron deficiency anaemia and its help with physical endurance and hypertrophy because it can relieve fatigue.

Shilajit Boosts ATPs

One of the components found in shilajit is called dibenzo alpha pyrones (DBPs). Through DBPs, shilajit works to rejuvenate cells and improve energy production. In an unpublished study (1), participants who took shilajit for 15 days experienced an increase of 14% in adenosine triphosphate (ATP) after exercising. ATP is the “molecule that fuels life. It is where our cells get the energy needed to perform its tasks.”The study found that using shilajit increased ATP levels after exercise. In other words, energy levels increased after exercise when participants used shilajit.

Shilajit Improves Exercise Performance

So, if ATP is the source of energy in the body, CoQ10 is the component that converts food and oxygen. Thus, CoQ10 is a vital piece of the puzzle for energy production the body. Another study found that shilajit improves exercise performance in a couple ways: First, it protects the body’s tissue through the production of ATP, and second, it increased “mean fitness scores” by 15%, because shilajit maximizes the benefits of CoQ10.All this scientific jargon aside – in studies, those using shilajit experienced higher energy levels than those who didn’t use shilajit.

Shilajit Heals Your Bones

Shilajit has long been used to accelerate the healing of bones. This was confirmed during the 60s, 70s, and 80s, by Soviet doctors who used it for this very purpose. Shilajit is extremely effective for the regeneration of fractures and broken bones. In one study (“Medical Drugs from Humus Matter: Focus on Moomie,” researchers found that shilajit resin helps to regenerate damaged bones almost 2 times faster than normal. If you suffer from fractures or broken bones as a result of exercise, using shilajit will greatly improve your performance.

The effects of Shilajit supplementation on fatigue-induced decreases in muscular strength and serum hydroxyproline levels.

Joshua L. Keller, Terry J. Housh, Ethan C. Hill, Cory M. Smith, Richard J. Schmidt & Glen O. Johnson  Published in: Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition

Background

Shilajit is a safe, fluvic mineral complex exudate that is common to Ayurvedic medicine and is composed of fulvic acids, dibenzo-α-pyrones, proteins, and minerals. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of 8 weeks of Shilajit supplementation at 250 mg·d− 1 (low dose) and 500 mg·d− 1 (high dose) versus placebo on maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) strength, concentric peak torque, fatigue-induced percent decline in strength, and serum hydroxyproline (HYP).

Methods

Sixty-three recreationally-active men (X¯¯¯¯ ± SD: 21.2 ± 2.4 yr.; 179.8 ± 6.3 cm; 83.1 ± 12.7 kg) volunteered to participate in this study. The subjects were randomly assigned to the high dose, low dose, or placebo group (each group: n = 21). During pre-supplementation testing, the subjects performed 2 pretest MVICs, 2 sets of 50 maximal, bilateral, concentric isokinetic leg extensions at 180°·s− 1 separated by 2-min of rest, and 2 posttest MVICs. Following 8 weeks of supplementation, the subjects repeated the pre-supplementation testing procedures. In addition, the groups were dichotomized at the 50th percentile based on pre-supplementation MVIC and baseline HYP. Mixed model ANOVAs and ANCOVAs were used to statistically analyze the dependent variables for the total groups (n = 21 per group) as well as dichotomized groups.

Results

For the upper 50th percentile group, the post-supplementation adjusted mean percent decline in MVIC was significantly less for the high dose group (8.9 ± 2.3%) than the low dose (17.0 ± 2.4%; p = 0.022) and placebo (16.0 ± 2.4%; p = 0.044) groups. There was no significant (p = 0.774) difference, however, between the low dose and placebo groups. In addition, for the upper 50th percentile group, the adjusted mean post-supplementation baseline HYP for the high dose group (1.5 ± 0.3 μg·mL− 1) was significantly less than both the low dose (2.4 ± 0.3 μg·mL− 1p = 0.034) and placebo (2.4 ± 0.3 μg·mL− 1p = 0.024) groups.

Conclusions

The results of the present study demonstrated that 8 weeks of Shilajit supplementation at 500 mg·d− 1 promoted the retention of maximal muscular strength following the fatiguing protocol and decreased baseline HYP. Thus, Shilajit supplementation at 500 mg·d− 1 elicited favorable muscle and connective tissue adaptations.

                                   Soybean (Glycine Max)

Soybean, (Glycine max), also called soja bean or soya beanannual legume of the pea family and its edible seed. The soybean is economically the most important bean in the world, providing vegetable protein for millions of people and ingredients for hundreds of chemical products. The soybean is one of the richest and cheapest sources of protein and is a staple in the diets of people and animals in numerous parts of the world. The seed contains 17 percent oil and 63 percent meal, 50 percent of which is protein. Because soybeans contain no starch, they are a good source of protein for diabetics. Soybean contains complete protein, which provides amino acids needed to help build and repair muscles. Soy can also be combined with other forms of protein very easily. Whey and casein are two examples of proteins often mixed in with soy protein. Some studies have shown that combining different forms of protein can lead to even better increases in lean body mass because each protein has a different amino acid absorption rate.

Soy protein is the super food as it has all the 9 essential amino: acids-histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan and valine. However, it has less quantity of methionine and lysine. You can supplement these two with lentils, black beans, quinoa, and pistachios

Other studies focused on bodybuilding have shown that soy protein can increase muscle mass during resistance training. Consumption of soy protein helps with increasing lean body mass in young male bodybuilders.

Another study focusing on post-menopausal women found that adding soy protein to a diet, when paired with weight training, increases resting energy expenditure and muscle mass.

Soy foods have long been known to contain antioxidants, which the body needs in order to fight free radicals. Antioxidants do what their name suggests: They fight the oxidation process in your body. Antioxidants primarily come from plant-based foods. Some examples of antioxidants are vitamin E, vitamin C, beta-carotene, lycopene and selenium.

The main health advantage of eating foods that have high levels of antioxidants is how they fight against free radicals. Free radicals are made by the body when it processes food, sunlight and toxins, such as smoke, pollution and alcohol. With antioxidants, your body can prevent free radicals from forming or it can break them down before they do any harm.

By fighting free radicals with antioxidants, your body could be better-protected against chronic diseases that have been linked to oxidative stress. Those diseases include cardiovascular disease and diabetes. As for fitness enthusiasts and workout warriors, exercise can actually increase the body’s production of free radicals. That’s where consuming soy protein, such as the protein found in soy milk, can help, specifically before moderate-intensity, weight resistance exercise.

Vidarikanda (Pueraria tuberose)

Vidarikand (Pueraria tuberosa) is a creeper which has circular leafless stems. It is commonly found around the canals and rivers and in the lower hills of Himalayas at the height of 3000 ft. Underground fruits are found attached to its roots. Fruits vary in shape and size and its taste is very similar to that of madhuyashti. This is why it is known as swadu kand (tasty fruit).

Vidari / Vidari Kanda, and is a rejuvenating drug of Ayurveda. It is mainly used as reproductive tonic that promotes sexual desire, treats nocturnal emission in males, and for females, and treats menstrual disorders, menopause syndrome, and uterus weakness. It is a cooling, a nourishing, and tonic. Vidari cures weakness. Due to cooling nature it helps in the burning sensation in the body, excessive heat, and bleeding disorders. It is aphrodisiac, and improves sperms in males. Vidarikand promotes physical strength due to its ability to stimulate growth hormones. It also helps in improving chest circumference, muscular strength, and body weight. Vidari is a powerful herbal remedy that eases stress and boosts strength, endurance, memory, and immunity. It works as an aphrodisiac, lowers blood pressure, and fights inflammation. It helps control diabetes and epilepsy and protects your kidney from the damaging effects of toxins.

Vidari is known for its strengthening properties in Ayurveda. It may even have potential as a performance and strength booster in athletes and other sportspeople. One study examined the effectiveness of a medicinal formulation known as “vidarikandadi yog,” comprising vidari along with herbs like godhum and yava, in improving the physical well-being of children who played sports. When the remedy was given twice a day for 2 months to children, it improved chest circumference, weight, muscular strength, and cardiorespiratory parameters. Vidari is thought to have the ability to stimulate growth hormones, which may account for its ability to promote physical strength and weight gain

Your immune system works hard to defend you against infections and diseases. And vidari can support it in this function. One animal study found that supplementing the diet of mice with this herb increased the levels of antibodies which defend the body against pathogens. Research shows that this herb also has an anti-inflammatory effect. And while inflammation is an immune response to pathogens or injuries, persistent inflammation can be harmful.

This herb has also been found to have nephroprotective properties. One study looked at the effect of vidari on mice whose kidneys were damaged by exposure to a drug used in chemotherapy. It was found that the remedy afforded the kidneys significant protection against the toxic effects of this drug.

Kapikacchu (Mucuna pruriens)

Kapikacchu is a bean-like plant. It grows wild in the tropics, including India and the Bahamas, and its range may extend to southern Florida. The bean, seed, and hair of the bean pod are used to make medicine.

Kapikacchu has been used since ancient times in Ayurvedic medicine for the treatment of Parkinson's disease. Today, Kapikacchu is still used for treating Parkinson's disease, as well as for treating anxiety, arthritis, parasitic infections, and a condition called hyperprolactinemia. In hyperprolactinemia, the blood levels of a hormone called prolactin are too high. Kapikacchu is also used to relieve pain and fever, to induce vomiting, and to treat snakebite.

Kapikacchu is one of the most powerful Rasayanas in Ayurveda. Kapikacchu is a nutritive tonic commonly used in Ayurveda as an aphrodisiac and to support proper function of the reproductive system. It increases sexual energy and strengthens and tones the reproductive organs. In men, kapikacchu supports potency, stamina and control. It increases the sperm population by improving the testosterone level. In women it promotes a healthy libido and fertility. The vitality bestowed by kapikacchunourishes the entire body and calms thenerves making it an excellent rejuvenator for vata. It is also natural source of levodopa (L-dopa) which is an essential precursor to the neurotransmitter dopamine. So, it can be proved that a magical drug due to its multidirectional work.

Kapikacchu directly to the skin for joint and muscle pain, to stimulate surface blood flow in conditions that involve paralysis, and to treat scorpion stings.

Kapikacchu contain L-dopa (4-3, 4-dihydroxy phenyladaline) gluthione, lecithin, gallic acid, glycosides, nicotine, prurenine, prurenidine, dark brown viscous oil, alkaloids mucanine, tannic acid, resin, and lecithin. Kapikacchu silage contains 11-23% crude protein, 35-40% crude fiber, and the dried beans 20-35% crude protein. It has Anthelmintic, Diuretic, Aphrodisiac, Nervine, Astringent, Rejuvenative, Analgesic, Carminative properties.

Increases dopamine level

By increasing dopamine levels in your body, kapikacchu may help increase lean muscle mass by stimulating human growth hormone production. Dopamine has been shown to increase HGH levels within the body and human growth hormone is known to increase protein synthesis and help stimulate muscle growth.

Increases Testosterone

Testosterone production plays a central role in libido and sexual performance for both men and women. While women produce much less testosterone than men, it is still a vital hormone for sexual interest and desire.

A benefit of kapikacchu has been used traditionally as an aphrodisiac for both men and women. One of the scientific reasons why the herb has been so effective for this purpose is due to another hormone called prolactin.

Prolactin is a hormone with reproductive, metabolic and immunoregulatory functions. It is needed in small amounts but an excess of estrogen in the body can lead to high levels. Prolactin tends to counteract testosterone in the body, thus reducing sexual interest.

In fact, a common side effect of drugs that stimulate prolactin function is impotence in men and low libido for women .Increased dopamine from the L-dopa found in a high quality kapikacchu extract reduces excessive prolactin and increases testosterone in the body. Many women and men quickly notice an increase in sexual desire and performance when taking kapikacchu from this hormonal shift.

Low Dopamine and L-Dopa

The neurotransmitter dopamine acts upon your central nervous system and, in concert with other neurotransmitters, plays a vital role in motivation, attention, memory, mood, relaxation, sexual desire, sleep and many other areas.

Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus)

Shatavari possesses traditional importance in the ‘Hindu’ religion, known as ‘Queen of herbs’ due to its peculiar nature of promoting love and devotion. This powerful herb was first mentioned in Rig Veda and Atharva Veda. Shatavari herb is used as a powerful aphrodisiac (Vaajikarana) and tonic (Rasayana) for thousands of years in India.

The word ‘Shatavari’ comprises two Sanskrit words which precisely mean “she who has hundreds (Shat) of partners or husbands (var)” however in therapeutic benefits it is perceived as “she who has the potential to cure hundreds of diseases” or “she who has one hundred roots”.

In Ayurveda, Shatavari herb is perceived as a female tonic since it is a rejuvenating herb. It plays a crucial role in the physiological events of women’s life. From female infertility to pregnancy and from menarche to menopause Shatavari benefits are astounding of which managing the reproductive health of women is major.

Uses of Shatavari as per Ayurveda texts

·         It is traditionally used for Premenstrual syndrome and sexual illness.

·         It helps in strengthening the female reproductive system and thereby resolves infertility related problems.

·         Intake of Shatavari powder improves the production of breast milk in lactating women.

·         Shatavari is very effective in preventing gas formation in the alimentary canal which further reduces the abdominal distension.

·         It is traditionally used in the treatment of arthritis, diarrhea, and edema, chronic and common fevers.

·         Shatavari has shown its potency in the long-term treatment of diabetes, cough, and abdominal ulcers.

·         It helps in the relaxation of cardiac systems and this is necessary for patients suffering from arrhythmias and palpitations.

·         It helps to decrease cholesterol levels in the blood and reduces lipid accumulation, which prevents the chances of heart attacks.

·         Since it is rich in natural dietary fibers, it helps in preventing obesity by reducing overeating.

Antihepatotoxic activity

Alcoholic extract of root of A. racemosus has been shown to significantly reduce the enhanced levels of alanine transakinase, aspartate transaminase and alkaline phosphate in CCl4 induced heptic damagein rats, indicating antihepatotoxic potential of A. racemosus.( J Med Arom PI Sci. 2000;22:49–52)

Anti-inflammatory effects

ACE inhibited topical edema in the mouse ear, following administration at 200 mg/kg (i.p.), leading to substantial reductions in skin thickness and tissue weight, inflammatory cytokine production, neutrophil-mediated myeloperoxidase activity, and various histopathological indicators. Furthermore, ACE was effective at reducing inflammatory damage induced by chronic TPA exposure and evoked a significant inhibition of vascular permeability induced by acetic acid in mice.( J Ethnopharmacol. 2009 Jan 12; 121(1):28-34.)

Anti-stress activity

Chlorophytum arundinaceum (C.arundinaceum), Asparagus adscendens (A. adscendens) and A. racemosus are used in the Indian traditional medicine system for improving the general state of health and for stress-related immune disorders. The effects of the methanol and aqueous extracts of the tuberous roots of these plants were examined in an experimental mouse stress model, induced by swimming. The extracts were shown to exert an inhibitory effect on pro-inflammatory cytokines, namely interleukin 1β and tumour necrosis factor α, and on the production of nitric oxide in mouse macrophage cells RAW 264.7 stimulated by lipopolysaccharide in vitro. Similar inhibition was also observed in the production of interleukin 2 in EL4 lymphoma cells stimulated by concanavalin A. Corticosterone levels in serum and adrenal glands were measured. The findings suggest that these plants may be beneficial in the management of stress and inflammatory conditions (Indian J Exp Biol. 2012 Jun; 50(6):419-24).

                                                                Loha Bhasma

Loha Bhasma (also spelled as lauha bhasma or Lauh Bhasma) is mineral-based ayurvedic medicine. It contains elemental iron micro-fine particles prepared through the process of calcination under high temperature. In Ayurveda, Loh bhasma is used for anemia, general debility, liver enlargement, spleen enlargement, and hiatus hernia. Purified iron is processed with herbal juices and then calcined under high temperature to make bhasma or iron ash.

Loha Bhasma has following healing properties as per Ayurveda texts.

1.    Haematinic (increases hemoglobin levels)

2.    Hematogenic (helps in formation of red blood cells)

3.    Lowers bilirubin

4.    Fat Burner

5.    Digestive Stimulant

6.    Astringent

7.    Emmenagogue

8.    Iron deficiency anemia

9.    General debility

10. Liver enlargement

11. Spleen enlargement

12. Hiatus hernia

13. Night fall

14. Impotency

15. Weakness due to bleeding disorders

Loha Bhasma (Lauh Bhasma) is an ayurvedic iron preparation. It is best for iron deficiency anemia, Kapha disorders, loss of appetite and obesity. It has Lekhana action and burns excess fat. Thus, it is also useful in obesity. Lauha bhasma works well in central obesity and reduces belly fat. In Ayurveda, it is used for the diseases of blood, muscles, heart, liver, spleen and abdomen.

Iron Deficiency Anemia

Loha bhasma contains highly absorbable elemental iron micro-fine particles. Therefore, it can help in iron deficiency anemia. Ayurvedic medicines used for anemia contain Lauh bhasma as a main ingredient.

Bleeding disorders

Loha bhasma is also beneficial for bleeding disorders. However, it may not reduce bleeding, but Lauha bhasma can compensate the iron loss that occurs due to bleeding disorders. For stopping bleeding, ayurveda has other remedies including RAKTACHANDANADI KWATH, MOCHRAS etc. Loh bhasma can be used with these remedies to reduce symptoms like restlessness, debility, vertigo and fatigue.

Loss of appetite, indigestion & abdominal distension

Loha bhasma has digestive stimulant properties and increases appetite. It helps in loss of appetite, indigestion and abdominal distension by stimulating appetite, helping in digestion and reduces gas in the abdomen.

                         Cardamom (Eletteria cardamomum)

Cardamom, also spelled cardamonspice consisting of whole or ground dried fruits, or seeds, of Elettaria cardamomum, a herbaceous perennial plant of the ginger family (Zingiberaceae). The seeds have a warm, slightly pungent, and highly aromatic flavour somewhat reminiscent of camphor. They are a popular seasoning in South Asian dishes, particularly curries, and in Scandinavian pastries.

In Ayurveda, cardamom is considered a tridoshic spice which helps balance the Vata, Pitta and Kapha doshas. It is also known for its warming and soothing capacities. Cardamom is rich in minerals like potassium, calcium, magnesium and phosphorus. While they vary in flavour, the black cardamom health benefits and green cardamom health benefits are largely shared.

One of the many Cardamom powder benefits is that it aids weight loss through improved metabolism and digestion. One animal study even showed that cardamom is good for health as it prevents obesity, inflammation and oxidative liver stress associated with high carbohydrate, high fat diets. Another study conducted with overweight Prediabetic women showed cardamom benefits weight loss as supplementation was associated with a decrease in weight and waist circumference.

Reduces Muscle and Joint Pain

Throughout Ayurvedic practices, cardamom has been used for muscle and joint pain. Irregular neural signal cause fatigue, leading painful muscle contractions and spasms, often seen in older generations. Cardamom research revealed number of bioactive ingredients possessing anti-inflammatory and anti-carcinogenic properties. In animal studies, cardamom’s anti-inflammatory ingredients have been shown to be effective in decreasing muscle pain and spasms.

Improves Digestive Health

As mentioned before, cardamom has been widely used in South Asian cuisines to not only flavour the dishes but improve overall digestion. Research shows cardamom to enhance secretion of stomach’s bile acid, further enhancing overall digestive process.  Due to number of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds found in cardamom’s extract, it also stimulates overall metabolism, while preventing other gastrointestinal problems such as acid reflux, heartburn, stomach cramps and diarrhea. This healing ability is believed to come from the same bioactive compounds that reduce muscular spasms, as the stomach line is largely made from smooth muscle cells.

Indigestion, also known as dyspepsia, is a condition where digestion is somehow impaired. The symptoms may include: upper abdominal pain, abdominal fullness, heartburn, nausea, belching and sometimes can be painful. Indigestion can also be a symptom of stomach ulcers, which are inflated lining of the stomach. Researchers found that cardamom’s anti-inflammatory ingredients reduced aspirin and alcohol induced ulcer formation, by decreasing inflammatory protein levels (TNF-alpha) and their activity. Tumor necrosis factor (or TNF for short) is one of the main cell signaling protein families for the immune system. TNF activates natural response causing inflammation to fight off foreign damaged cells or infections. The foreign invaders cause TNF levels to rise, bringing a surge of inflammatory immune response. But, constant stress maintains elevated TNF levels resulting in chronic inflammation resulting in hyperactivity and damage of healthy or un-infected tissue. So, by decreasing TNF-alpha concentrations, you’re also decreasing overall inflammation.

Lowers Bad Cholesterol

Due to it’s well known antioxidant properties, cardamom has been investigated for involvement in blood health and lipid management. For starters, cardamom contains fiber which enhances overall heart health and helps lower cholesterol levels.

Modern diet often contains high fat content which negatively impact blood circulation and some metabolic processes. High levels of low density lipoprotein (LDL), sometimes referred to as “bad cholesterol” have been associated with number of problems including increased risk of cardiovascular disease, obesity and coronary artery disease. LDLs carry fats (such as cholesterol, triglycerides and phospholipids) around the body to designated cells. However, LDLs can be damaged through oxidation when they enter endothelium (a thin cell line that covers interior of blood vessels). Oxidized LDL particles get stuck in these arterial cell walls, and if not cleared begin to gather more debris, eventually progressing into full atherosclerosis.

Cardamom is a rich source of manganese, an important component in managing high blood sugar levels. Recent animal study found that manganese within cardamom has great potential for combating early signs of diabetes, by not only reducing blood sugar levels but also decreasing LDL levels compared to control group.[39] Cardamom and cholesterol have also been extensively studied on people. Green cardamom powder produced a gradual 25 percent decrease of LDL, total cholesterol and triglycerides reductions in hypertensive patients over a three month trial.

There is also a growing belief amongst science community that oxidative stress and chronic inflammation is a great contributor to number of metabolic disorders such as type 2 diabetes.  Because of powerful antioxidant properties, spices like cardamom are at the centre of science testing for their effects on symptoms like hyperglycemia. Studies showed that cardamom is an effective agent in lowering LDL as well as total cholesterol levels in both diabetic and pre-diabetic patients.

Micronutrient Profile

With current diet we often don’t get enough important vitamins, minerals and elements which not only participate in benefits discussed in this article, but also take part in numerous metabolic processes which maintain body’s function and fitness levels. Besides protein and dietary fiber, cardamom contains number of important micro- and phytonutrients, including:

  • calcium
  • copper
  • potassium
  • magnesium
  • manganese
  • zinc
  • potassium,
  • phosphorus
  • iron
  • vitamin A
  • vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid)
  • vitamin B1 (thiamin)
  • vitamin B2 (riboflavin)
  • vitamin B3 (niacin)
  • vitamin B6 (pyridoxine)

Some of these micronutrients are in small concentrations (like copper, zinc, riboflavin and thiamin), while other minerals (such as manganese, magnesium, zinc and potassium) are cardamoms’ main active nutrients. All these components play important roles in blood circulation, growth development, tissue regeneration and repair, bone density, sex hormones and overall metabolic health. For example, one tablespoon of cardamom provides 80 percent of body’s manganese daily requirement, an element which plays a crucial role in number of body’s body systems.
